The Costa Dorada
Spain's Costa Dorada - Gold Coast - is renowned for its golden sandy beaches, but there is plenty more here to keep you and your family busy.
Located 40 minutes from Barcelona, Sitges is to that city what Brighton is to London – a popular, beachside weekend getaway with an active gay community, vibrant nightlife and huge choice of bars and restaurants. The beaches are good and clean here. Away from the beach, there are a number of good museums, for which a pass can be surprisingly cheap.
Vilanova i la Geltru is a fishing port where the hustle and bustle of the quay can be observed and enjoyed. It is host to two impressive museums: Museu Romantic Can Papiol recreates the life of a wealthy family in the 19th century; while the Railway Museum houses an impressive collection of steam, diesel and electric engines, plus railway paraphernalia.
Salou is one of the liveliest resorts along the Costa Dorada, a modern, purpose-built holiday town with good facilities for families. Cambrils, nor far from Salou, is still more of an old fishing village than a modern resort, with narrow cobbled alleys and operational fishing boats in the harbour. You can sit in one of the many harbourside bars with a drink as you watch the day’s catch being unloaded and auctioned, and then eat out at any of the fine seafood restaurants in the area. The town is also the location for an International Music Festival each summer.
Tarragona is the main city on the Costa Dorada - declared a World Heritage City by Unesco in 2000, it features the remains of many Roman structures. The Paseo Arqueologico is in the upper, walled section of the town – a walk along this Archeological Avenue takes in some of the ruins as well as impressive Roman columns, walls and towers. Elsewhere, the remains of a forum, amphitheatre and Roman Circus can be explored.
